Would you please advise with a simple yes or no – if you are elected, would you support pressuring the coalition Government to bring forward, and vote for, the Member’s Bill introduced by NZ First, which seeks to repeal the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2021 so that decision making for fluoridation can be returned to the hands of each local council?

Yes, I support this bill. I believe the decision on whether fluoride should be added, or not added, to drinking water should not be made centrally, but instead returned to local councils. Furthermore, I believe it is a matter that should ultimately be put to referendum so communities themselves, not elected members alone, can decide.
At the same time, I will not be committing to “pressuring” the Government with a yes or no answer. Council’s role is to advocate to central government, but it is also important to respect that this bill must follow due parliamentary process. My support for the principle of local and community decision-making is clear, but I will remain independent of pressure from any advocacy group.
