Fluoride Free New Zealand launched a parliamentary petition on the 2nd of August 2024 to 19 November 2024 to stop water fluoridation in New Zealand. Petition was handed to NZ First on 11 February 2025.
The petition contained the following three reasons why fluoridation should be stopped:
1. Many qualified scientists say that exposure to the levels of fluoride in fluoridated communities causes a level of harm comparable to lead. Authentication of this statement.
2. The US National Toxicology Program’s 6-year review confirms that fluoride may lower children’s IQ. Authentication on Page 13 of the Monograph.
3. The Cochrane Review 2015, CATFISH study (2022, UK), and LOTUS study (2023, UK) show little or no benefit to teeth from fluoridated water. Authentication of statements on dental studies.
OUTCOME OF PETITION
1. New Zealand First accepted our petition at Parliament (see below) and advised they have submitted a Private Members Bill which calls for Part5(a) of the Health Act, which gave decision making powers of fluoridation to the Director General of Health, to be repealed and instead for the decision to be made by local referendum.
2. Our petition passed the first hurdle at the Petitions Committee and was referred to the Health Select Committee.
3. We provided a submission to the Health Select Committee as to why fluoridation should be stopped. (including Appendix 1, Appendix 2 & Appendix 3)
4. Mary Byrne gave a ten minute oral submission to the Health Select Committee.
5. The Health Select Committee wrote a report for the Government which advised that nothing should be done. The only exception was NZ First who continued to support local referendum.
Fluoride is the new Lead. Science caught up with lead, mercury and dioxin and now it has caught up with fluoride.
