Would you please advise with a simple yes or no – if you are elected, would you support pressuring the coalition Government to bring forward, and vote for, the Member’s Bill introduced by NZ First, which seeks to repeal the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2021 so that decision making for fluoridation can be returned to the hands of each local council?

I appreciate that this is an issue about which people hold strong views.
As a local councillor, my responsibility is first and foremost to ensure that Council is delivering safe, reliable drinking water in line with the law. Since the passing of the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2021, decisions about whether to fluoridate water supplies are no longer made by councils. They are determined by the Director-General of Health, following the legislative direction of Central government.
Whether or not the law should be changed again is therefore a matter for Parliament. As a candidate for local government, it would not be appropriate for me to commit to lobbying for or against a specific political party’s Member’s Bill. My role, if elected, is to represent all of our community’s needs within the scope of Council’s responsibilities, while ensuring public health, safety, and affordability remain central.
I support open, transparent discussion about community health matters, and I respect that there are differing perspectives on fluoridation. But I do not believe it is constructive to make a simple “yes” or “no” pledge to a question that sits outside the direct decision-making powers of local
