Fluoride Free New Zealand and New Zealand Doctors Speaking Out With Science take legal action against Hastings District Council over Fluoridation.
Fluoride Free New Zealand calls for the secret Government review on fluoridation to be replaced by an independently chaired open public discussion.
The Government, with the approval of Prime Minister John Key, has been undertaking a secret so-called review of the scientific evidence on fluoridation. There is no doubt this review has been set up to counter the growing movement to end water fluoridation, not to honestly look at the safety and effectiveness of fluoridation. If it was, scientists from both sides would have been invited to contribute.
The review is being led by Prof Gluckman who last year said “the science is effectively settled” on water fluoridation and Prof Skegg (Royal Society) who disregarded information highlighting concerns on fluoridation’s safety and effectiveness in 2012. At that time Prof Skegg said he didn’t need to review fluoridation as it was already proven.
Recently concerns have been acknowledged by government scientist Dr Michael Beasley, Director of the National Poisons Centre. When asked if the jury was still out regarding the safety of Fluoridation, Dr Beasley, agreed saying “I think it is”, adding “Certainly the question really is the safety of fluoride at what level?” “The dose determines a lot of what happens”, he confirmed.
This concern has been mirrored by many communities around the country.
Hamilton City Council ended fluoridation in June 2013 highlighting that there was “Statistical evidence that fluoridation potentially causes harm” in their reasoning to discontinue.
When councillors are faced with the science, ethics and common sense around fluoridation they become increasingly uneasy that they are being held responsible for adding this neurotoxin to their community’s water supply. However, they find it difficult to make a decision to stop because they are subjected to intense lobbying from the Ministry of Health and the New Zealand Dental Association; lobbying far more intensely than those opposed to fluoridation

Even fluoridation promoter’s claim to fluoride’s benefit is from contact with the surface of the teeth. The original theory that fluoride needed to be swallowed as children’s teeth were growing has already been consigned to the dust bin of flawed theories.
According to Prof Paul Connett, who has been researching fluoridation for the past 17 years, “Fluoride is where lead was at in the 1990s”. There is no argument that fluoride is toxic at high doses. As we get more and more precise testing it will become indisputable that low chronic doses are also harmful.
Fluoride Free New Zealand demands that balance is brought to this taxpayer’s review of water fluoridation. If the science is honestly and objectively reviewed on fluoridation, Fluoride Free New Zealand is confident it will lead to the immediate cessation of water fluoridation in NZ.
New Zealanders have been down this path before. We were one of the last countries to stop leaded petrol and we were the last country to stop using 245T. New Zealand is now one of only a handful of countries that continues with fluoridation. 97% of Europe has rejected it.
