Request to provide presentation to Caucus
Dear Prime Minister,
World leading fluoridation expert Paul Connett, will be in New Zealand in February next year. He is Professor Emeritus of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology and is co-author of the book “The Case Against Fluoride – How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There”, published by Chelsea Green.
Prof Connett has been researching fluoridation for the past twenty years and has spoken as an authority on this topic worldwide. His presentations are first class and provide attendees with the science and compelling facts that make informed opinion on water-fluoridation possible. We believe it is incumbent upon us all to educate ourselves about health issues that affect our health and wellbeing, especially public health directives that affect everyone.
We would like to provide you and your caucus with a presentation by Prof Connett. We are therefore asking if you would set aside an hour to an hour and a half in Wellington during the week of the 19th to the 23rd of February.
We would share with you the latest statistics on children’s dental health in New Zealand and the latest science on harm to health, particularly children’s brain development.
Many of those who oppose water-fluoridation have voted for you, the Labour party, in good faith believing that as our decision makers, you will listen to why we believe water-fluoridation is harmful to our population and the environment. It is particularly important now with the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Bill awaiting Second Reading for you and all caucus members to hear both sides of this issue. This Bill is designed to extend fluoridation and remove the ability for communities to decide for themselves.
Thus far the Government has never listened to those of us who are opposed to fluoridation. With the introduction of the Bill last year, Health Select Committee members were briefed by the Ministry of Health but our many requests for the same consideration were ignored. We then had Select Committee Hearings where people were only given five minutes to speak to two of three of the committee members. The Hearings were held over different days, so the Committee never got to hear a comprehensive and cogent rationale for opposition to fluoridation. And now, to make matters even worse, none of the MPs on today’s Select Committee were on the committee when the Hearings were held.
Recent news media has anyone opposed to things such as fluoridation, labelled as “cranks”. This shows how out of touch some sectors of our society are with others. It is likely that at least half the population of New Zealand is opposed to fluoridation. Referendums and consultations show that people in non-fluoridated areas are far more likely to be opposed to fluoridation than for it. With half of New Zealand not fluoridated we can assume that around half of New Zealanders are opposed to fluoridation. Extending fluoridation into non-fluoridated communities will undoubtedly result in a large amount of opposition from the local population, especially for the MPs in those areas.
We sincerely hope that this Government is different, and that this Government will listen.
Please let me know if, and when, you can make this time available during the week of 19th till 23rd of February. Your personal attention and support to this request would be most appreciated
Kind regards
