The Advertising Standards Authority says it is not clear whether the statements on a flyer we, at Fluoride Free New Zealand, used to advertise a public meeting in Rotorua this year, were fact or opinion. We wish to rule out this ambiguity and assure people that we stand by the statements, which are supported by the best evidence-based science available.
We said, “Swallowing fluoride is unsafe for babies”. We say this because the New Zealand Institute of Environmental Science and Research says that bottle fed babies exceed the upper limit 30% of the time when fed formula made up with water fluoridated at 0.7ppm and 93% of the time when formula made up with water fluoridated at 1ppm. Most water in New Zealand that is fluoridated (half NZ water supplies) is fluoridated at 0.85ppm. Children in fluoridated areas have twice as much dental fluorosis as children in non-fluoridated areas. Dental fluorosis is the result of being over-exposed (i.e. poisoned) to fluoride in the early years of life. Clearly fluoridated water is not safe for babies.
We said, “Swallowing fluoride doesn’t protect teeth”. We say this because the US Public Health Service’s Centers for Disease Control published findings in 1999 that the incorporation of fluoride into the growing enamel does not make the teeth more resistant to decay, and that if there is any benefit it comes from surface contact to the tooth. All large scale studies around the world show no significant difference in decay rates between fluoridated areas and non-fluoridated areas. The Iowa study published in 2009, which was a longitudinal study following children up to age 9, found ingesting fluoride did not result in less tooth decay.
We said “Swallowing fluoride can cause harm”. We say this because there is a plethora of science that shows that too much fluoride can cause a variety of harmful health effects. It is undisputed that too much fluoride causes a disease called skeletal fluorosis. The National Research council, the top scientific body in the US, found fluoride effects the thyroid at very low levels. The science today shows quite clearly that too much fluoride causes a reduction in IQ and the world’s oldest and most prestigious journal, The Lancet, has published a report which classifies fluoride as a neurotoxin.
We, in Fluoride Free New Zealand, stand by the information we have published as factual and informative. New Zealanders have a right to know the facts about fluoridation and not be scared away with absurd warnings of dire consequences to dental health if we dare to join the majority of the world, including 97% of Europe, and stop adding toxic fluoride chemicals to the public water supply.
