Lake Taupo’s reputation as a pristine and protected environment is being contaminated by fluoride chemicals being flushed into Lake Taupo. Hydrofluorosilcic Acid is the toxic chemical that Taupo District Council uses to fluoridate Turangi’s public water supply. According to Point 12 of the safety data sheet under Ecological Information, it states: Ecotoxicity- Avoid contaminating waterways. It is even more revealing under Point 13 of the safety data sheet, where it states: Disposal methods – Dispose of material through a licensed waste contractor.
The resource consent Waikato Regional Council provided Taupo District Council in 2003 for the waste water treatment process makes no mention of the approximately half a tonne of hazardous chemicals that are used in the fluoridation process of Turangi township. Less than 1% of these chemicals are swallowed by Turangi residents, and 99% of the chemicals added into the water supply are flushed into the lake down drains through toilets, showers, car washing etc. Taupo District Council have confirmed that these chemicals are not removed in the waste water treatment process and are being added to the Hangarito stream that feeds Lake Taupo.
This information would have been uncovered if an open transparent discussion on fluoridation was held. Turangi has been fluoridated for 47 years, and Taupo for 50 years. According to council staff, fluoridation has never been reviewed and opened to the public for consultation in the last half century. In reaching their decision not to review fluoridation in the 2015 Long Term Plan, Taupo District Councillors did not ask council staff to provide any information, technical or otherwise relating to fluoridation prior to or during the LTP deliberations. This is despite fluoridation now raising serious discussion around New Zealand in recent years. Hamilton and Hastings held referenda in 2013, Rotorua chose not to fluoridate in 2014, and Thames is holding a referendum later in 2015. In fact, only 23 out of 67 Councils fluoridate.
With this latest information regarding the resource consent coming to light, it seems difficult to believe that approximately half a Tonne of a chemical, classified as Class 6 hazardous poison, can be added to Lake Taupo annually without a resource consent that does not even mention them explicitly?
